Unapologetically You: Why Fierce Self-Love Is Essential

Love yourself fiercely because your life depends on it!

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of responsibilities, obligations, and distractions. We prioritise work, family, friends, and many other demands, often needing more time for ourselves. But there’s a crucial truth that many of us overlook: showing up for ourselves every day is not just important — it’s essential for our overall well-being and success.

What Does It Mean to Show Up for Yourself? Think about what you’d like to change today. Showing up for yourself means making a conscious effort to prioritise your own needs, goals, and well-being. It involves being present, caring for your mental and physical health, and actively working towards personal growth and happiness. It’s about committing to yourself, day in and day out, in significant and small but meaningful ways.

WHY IS “SHOWING UP FOR YOURSELVES” IMPORTANT?

  1. Self-care is Not Selfish.

Fill your cup first! We have been conditioned to believe that putting ourselves first is selfish. However, the truth is that self-care is the foundation upon which we can build a healthy and balanced life. When we care for our physical, emotional, and mental health, we’re better equipped to handle life’s challenges and support others. Showing up for yourself ensures you have the energy and resilience needed to be there for those who depend on you.

2. Consistency Builds Confidence

On average, it takes between 18 and 254 days to create a new habit. Consistency is vital to personal growth. You build self-trust and confidence by showing up for yourself daily — whether through small acts like journaling, exercising, meditation, yoga, or setting aside time for reflection. You start believing in your ability to follow through on your commitments, which is crucial for achieving more significant long-term goals. This daily practice of showing up strengthens your inner resolve, making you more resilient in adversity.

3. Maintaining Mental Health

“Mens sana in corpore sano”. In a world where depression, stress and anxiety are becoming increasingly common, it’s vital to take proactive steps to maintain our mental health. Showing up for yourself daily could mean practising mindfulness, seeking therapy, or simply taking time to breathe, ground and centre yourself. These small actions can profoundly impact your mental well-being, helping you stay grounded and focused, even during difficult times.

4. Personal Growth and Fulfilment

Life starts outside your comfort zone! Life is a journey of constant growth and evolution. Showing up for yourself daily lets you stay in tune with your desires, passions, and goals. It encourages you to take small steps towards your dreams, no matter how big or small they may be. This daily commitment to personal growth can lead to a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life where you feel empowered to create your desired future.

5. Setting Boundaries

Learn to say NO without explaining why! Standing up for yourself also means setting and maintaining healthy boundaries. It’s about recognising your limits and saying “no” when necessary. By respecting your own needs, you teach others to respect them, too. This can prevent burnout, reduce stress, and ensure you have the time and energy to focus on what truly matters to you.

HOW TO SHOW UP FOR YOURSELF DAILY

  1. Start with Small Habits

Incorporate small, positive habits into your daily routine. These could be anything from drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning to meditation, yoga, and writing down three things you’re grateful for daily. These small actions can add up to significant changes over time. A tall and robust tree started its journey inside a seed.

2. Prioritize Your Health

Your health is your most valuable asset. Make time for regular exercise, eat nourishing foods, and get enough sleep. Remember, caring for your body is fundamental to showing up for yourself. It’s always better to prevent than to cure! Allowing our body to talk to us and deepening our connection to our physical body is essential. In my own experience, practising yoga and meditation has helped me deepen my connection to my body and allowed me to listen to its voice.

3. Practice Self-Compassion

Be kind to yourself, especially when things don’t go as planned. Understand that everyone makes mistakes and that perfection is not the goal. Self-compassion allows you to learn from your experiences and keep moving forward without being weighed down by self-criticism. Your speaking about yourself creates vibrations that move through your physical and energy bodies. Be mindful of the words you use when you talk about yourself!

4. Set Realistic Goal

Setting challenging and achievable goals helps you stay motivated and focused. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps, and celebrate your progress. This keeps you on track and reinforces the habit of showing up for yourself daily. You can also have grandiose goals; I encourage you to do that! However, it is crucial to start building confidence with smaller steps. Lao Tsu said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step”. Celebrate your first step.

5. Create a Support System

Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your journey. Whether it’s friends, family, teachers, meditation circle or a mentor, having a solid support system can make it easier to stay committed to showing up for yourself. Share your goals and aspirations with them, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Showing up for yourself daily is one of the most important things you can do for your overall well-being and happiness. It’s a practice that requires intention, consistency, and a deep commitment to your growth and fulfilment. By prioritising yourself, you enhance your life and become better equipped to contribute to the lives of those around you.

Remember, you are worth the effort!

Every day is a new opportunity to show up for yourself, to nurture your dreams, and to build the life you desire. Commit today, and watch how it transforms your world.
