Perimenopause: A Sacred Journey of Transformation and Rebirth

Perimenopause, the transitional phase leading up to menopause, is a period of significant change for us women. While much of the focus is on the physical and emotional symptoms, this stage can also be a profoundly spiritual experience. Perimenopause is a time of Transformation and Rebirth. It is a rite of passage, marking the transition from the reproductive years to a new phase of our life. This period of transformation often brings powerful initiations and a sense of death and rebirth, where old identities and roles tied to fertility, motherhood, social constructs, beliefs, ideas, and masks fall away, opening the way to a new, authentic self.

Since starting my perimenopause journey, I have found myself releasing so much of who I thought I was and experiencing moments of not knowing who I am anymore. I feel a blissful emptiness and an almost craving to be with the Divine Mother, the compassionate, nurturing, fearless, and creative feminine energy within and without. This connection with the Divine Mother seems to become more profound and more powerful through these transition years, and it can bring us comfort and solace, guiding us to rediscover ourselves, explore our inner worlds, and emerge deeper into who we are.

Perimenopause is a profound spiritual journey, a time when we are called to let go and Surrender. We are encouraged to release what no longer serves us, be it old behaviour patterns, relationships, or beliefs. The physical symptoms, such as hot flashes or irregular periods, can be seen as the body’s way of purging and cleansing, preparing for a new stage of life. By letting go and surrendering to the Divine Mother, our Higher Self and whoever we believe holds us, protects us and supports us, we increase our intuition and deeply connect with our Inner Wisdom. Many women report heightened intuition during perimenopause, feeling more in tune with their inner guidance. We start looking for ways to reconnect with our womb, reactivate, and rekindle the Heart-Womb connection. This can be a time of spiritual awakening, where we become more aware of subtle energies, dreams, synchronicities, etc. The thinning of the veil between the conscious and unconscious mind is a significant aspect of this journey. It allows us to be more open and receptive to the profound insights and deeper connection with our spiritual path or a more profound surrender and jump into the void. This journey is one of support and guidance, making us feel secure and guided.

At this time, we begin to embrace the Crone Archetype, or what I like to call the Empress and Wise One. In many spiritual traditions, these archetypes symbolise wisdom, knowledge, fearless power, and independence. The Empress represents femininity’s nurturing and creative aspects, while the Wise One embodies the wisdom and experience that comes with age. Perimenopause is often associated with the transition into these archetypes, where we step into the elder or wise woman role. This phase of life empowers us to embrace our inner strength and share wisdom with others.

I found that my Reflection and Healing times are becoming more precious to me at this stage. As my body changes, I may find myself revisiting past experiences, traumas, or unresolved emotions and seeing them from a completely different perspective. Spiritually, this can be an opportunity to heal old wounds, forgive, a

nd release any lingering negativity, paving the way for spiritual growth and wholeness. It is also a time when our boundaries become more substantial, and we no longer accept disrespect to keep the peace. This is a time of empowerment, where we take control of our lives and set boundaries that make us feel respected and valued.

One of the most profound changes I am experiencing is the powerful deepening of my connection to the Divine Mother. Embracing this energy has led me to a greater sense of self-compassion, acceptance, and love. It also inspired me to dive deeper into the natural cycles, a more profound connection with nature, the rhythms of life and the blissful and powerful energy I feel when I am with HER. This connection makes me feel loved and supported, and it’s a source of great comfort and strength.

With the arrival of perimenopause, I also found myself creating more Rituals and Ceremonies because engaging in rituals or ceremonies during this rite of passage can be a powerful way to honour myself, the cycles of life, and the Divine Mother. For instance, I create personal rituals to mark the end of menstruation, journal to explore my inner feelings, write poems and blog articles, practise a more feminine yoga connected to my energies and this passage, spend time in nature, and meditate to be in union with HER. These are all examples of personal rituals that can be deeply meaningful during perimenopause. Creating women’s circles, workshops, and classes focused on this passage where shared experiences are celebrated is a powerful experience. These practices help us ground the experience in a spiritual context, offering support and guidance. For instance, setting aside time daily for meditation or yoga can help us connect with our inner self and the divine feminine energy, allowing us to receive guidance and support through the almost dramatic ebbs and flows of perimenopause.

But with perimenopause comes uncertainty, too. Spiritually, perimenopause can teach valuable lessons about embracing uncertainty and impermanence. As the body changes unpredictably, women might be called to practice mindfulness, patience, and acceptance, finding peace in the present moment rather than resisting or fearing the unknown. This period also empowers us to set boundaries and say NO without explaining why. We learn to prioritise our time and energy, understanding that they are precious resources that should be used wisely. This is a form of Self-empowerment and self-care as we learn to protect our time and energy. Perimenopause can be an invitation to step into greater authenticity and personal power. It encourages stripping away societal expectations and pressures, allowing us to live more fully in alignment with our true selves. This spiritual empowerment can lead to a more genuine, purposeful, and fulfilling life. This rite of passage is a sacred journey, offering us profound spiritual lessons and opportunities for growth and awakening. It’s a time to embrace the changes, listen to our inner voice, and honour the wisdom that comes with age.

With Love & Grace
