In ancient times, the practice of Sacred Sexual Healing was deeply intertwined with the spiritual and religious beliefs of many cultures. At the heart of this practice were the revered priestesses, who were seen as intermediaries between the divine and the mortal realms. Their pivotal role extended to facilitating rituals that promoted physical, emotional, and spiritual healing through Sacred Sexual Healing Practices.
The Priestesses served in temples dedicated to Goddesses who embodied the teachings and held the secret healing practices of sexual alchemy, fertility, and healing, such as Inanna in Sumer, Ishtar in Babylon, Aphrodite in Greece, Hathor in Egypt, in the Vedic traditions of ancient India, particularly in Tantric practices… to name a few. These Goddesses were seen as the embodiment of life-giving forces, and their temples were places where the sacred and the sensual were deeply intertwined.
The Priestesses were not just practitioners of rituals and other spiritual practices. They were highly trained in the arts of healing, spirituality, and sexual healing practices, embodying a comprehensive and holistic approach that encompassed the mind, body, and spirit. They were seen as the living vessels of the Goddess, channelling her energy through rituals that brought together the physical and the divine.
🌹 THE RITUAL OF SACRED SEXUAL HEALING 🌹
We don’t remember very much of these ancient healing methods involving the woman’s womb’s power. A typical ritual might begin with purification, where the Priestess and the participant undergo a series of cleansing rituals, such as bathing in sacred waters or anointing with oils. Prayers, chants, and offerings followed to invoke the presence of the Goddess. Once prepared, the Priestess would engage in sacred sexual healing practices in union with the man or woman, often in a ritual space adorned with symbols of fertility and the Goddess. This act was not seen as ordinary intercourse but as a profoundly sacred communion with the divine, a deeply spiritual experience that transcended the physical realm. Through this sacred sexual act, it was believed that the participants could access the healing power of the Goddess, transforming their suffering into wholeness. These secret healing practices understood energy as a powerful force that, when directed with intention, could heal deep physical and emotional wounds. The Priestesses were skilled in channelling this energy through their Womb, using it to balance the participant’s inner forces, clear negative energy, and restore harmony to body, mind and soul.
🌹 BUT WHAT’S LEFT OF THIS SACRED ART TODAY? 🌹
As time passed, patriarchal societies suppressed the practice of sacred sexual healing, and the Priestesses were often demonised as harlots, whores, prostitutes or witches. However, the essence of their work — honouring the sacredness of sexuality and its healing potential — continued to influence spiritual traditions and practices. Today, echoes of these ancient practices can be found in various modern spiritual and healing modalities that seek to integrate secret healing practices and spirituality, reclaiming the ancient wisdom of the Priestesses who once served as the earthly representatives of the Goddess. The concept of sacred sexual healing by Priestesses is a fascinating aspect of ancient religions, but it remains shrouded in mystery and controversy. While there is some evidence of sacred sexual rituals associated with Goddesses like Inanna/Ishtar, Aphrodite, and the Devadasis in India, the historical and archaeological record is often incomplete and open to interpretation. The idea has been reinterpreted and reimagined in modern spiritual practices, adding another layer of complexity to our understanding of these ancient traditions. In a nutshell, we don’t know much about these sacred sexual rites. While some texts and artefacts suggest the existence of sacred sexual practices, direct evidence, particularly of the healing aspect, is often lacking or ambiguous. Much of what is known comes from literary sources, which can be symbolic or mythological rather than literal. Temples in South India, like those in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, have inscriptions and art depicting Devadasis. Some literature and accounts from travellers like Marco Polo provide insights into their roles, though the focus on sexual rites is often inferred rather than explicitly stated. I believe many of those teachings went underground and were destined to be practised and used by a few chosen ones. It was a necessary step to protect the teaching of sacred sexuality, also known as womb alchemy, and wait for the right time to surface again in service of humanity. In the last century, some of these teachings have started to come to light, but unfortunately, some of them became distorted and confusing for the practitioners. There is still a long way to go before we can reclaim the fullness of that holy work, and the road to that awakening and remembrance starts within. It is not an easy path, and there will be a time when the women of that lineage, who play a crucial role, will have to make the choice again: leave everything behind and surrender to the Goddess.
🌹 My story 🌹
After years of dedicated training and profound inner healing, I have successfully reclaimed a portion of what is now recognised as Sacred Sexuality, Womb Alchemy or Sacred Sexual Healing. But before I continue to describe what I remember and what the Divine Mother has reminded me of, I encourage you to take what you are about to read with a pinch of salt. There isn’t just one truth; we all come here in service and with different teachings. Take with you what resonated and discard what doesn’t. You can even take what doesn’t resonate as an explorative teaching to dive deeper into your being and see why you are rejecting it or feeling triggered by it. I also encourage you to share your experiences and insights with your community, as we can all learn from each other’s journeys.
And this is my story. One day, while I was talking to a friend, something happened. I felt as if something was being lifted inside of me. Suddenly, an old story started to surface… The Priestesses, residing and working in the temples of the Goddess, were women of unparalleled dedication. They devoted their entire lives to service, mastering the arts of healing, guiding humanity, and imparting the teachings of the Divine Mother. The esteemed High Priestess chose some, while others consciously decided to become Priestesses, a testament to their unwavering commitment. Whether chosen or choosing to be in service, the Priestesses’ training and inner work commenced at the time of their first menstrual blood, the menarche. This profound rite of passage was believed to hold the key to their destiny as servants of the Goddess, a moment of deep reverence and significance (I’ll delve more into the importance of the menarche in a priestess initiation in the coming weeks). After years of training and moving through several initiations, the Priestess’s journey to become a womb alchemist and a sacred sexual healer, among other things, is a source of inspiration. Her primary purpose, as the embodiment of the Goddess in all Her forms, was to serve humanity and the Earth. The Priestesses perform the healing rites that were created and channelled by the Priestesses to heal men and women and to initiate young adults into the next phase of their lives.
There is a misconception about the nature of these healings and how they were performed: the belief that only men were welcomed through the temple doors to be healed. However, it’s important to remember that both men and women of different ages and backgrounds, each with their unique stories and struggles, could walk to the temples and ask the Priestess to either perform womb healing or to seek guidance. The Priestesses worked with these secret healing techniques to help both men and women and to initiate young adults into adulthood (more about this in the coming weeks).
But the story I am remembering, the teachings I am reclaiming go back to more ancient times.
A long time ago, before the temples of stones dedicated to the Goddess, there were different temples or places of worship where energy was conducive to potent spiritual connections and divine experiences. They were in natural spaces and secret locations. Some of these temples were also invisible to the naked eye. In these spaces of great and powerful energy, the priestesses of the Goddess lived and worked. To be the Divine Mother’s Priestess was not just a role, a title, or a job. The women who chose to be in service were not selected. They decided to be priestesses and to be in service. Their call has been strong since childhood, and they only wanted to be with the Goddess, dedicate their life to Her, and do the necessary inner work to feel Her in body, mind, and soul, to be in a constant state of bliss.
The temple of the Divine Mother was not just a sanctuary but a place of profound belonging for children, men, and women alike. It was a haven of safety and comfort where all, regardless of their background or circumstances, were warmly embraced. Those needing healing and guidance found solace in the nurturing and all-encompassing power of the Mother, channelled through Her Priestesses here on Earth.
The Priestesses bestowed a transformative gift upon the women and girls who entered the ‘Temple.’ They initiated any woman or girl who sought it into the Womb Mysteries, a profound knowledge that rekindled the sacredness of their Womb. This knowledge was not just a source of empowerment but a key that unlocked the immense power of their Womb, enabling them to heal, transform, create, destroy, and navigate every initiation and rite of passage, guided by the wisdom of their Womb.
During those ancient times, the practice of initiating women into the Womb Mysteries from the time of the Menarche was a continuous tradition. Every woman was taught how to stay connected with their Womb and work with it in powerful ways, ensuring the continuity of this profound knowledge and lineage.
Although the Priestesses held some of the Mysteries for only chosen ones, most women walking on Earth knew about the power of the Womb and trained within the ‘Temples’ energies. These energies, a combination of spiritual, emotional, and physical elements, helped them remember how to hear the voice of their Womb.
Over the centuries, women’s ability to hear the voice of their Womb has been lost for various reasons. This loss of connection, with its profound impact on the world, is a matter of global significance. Our rituals, prayers, initiations, and inner work have profoundly and significantly influenced humanity and the Earth.
The day we ceased bleeding on the Earth Mother, marked the beginning of our disconnection from our Womb and our innate power to heal, transform, create, destroy, and be the vessel of the Goddess.
The day we stopped bleeding on the Earth and turned away from our power was a point of rupture and disconnection.
Yet, we are resilient, and our recovery from this disconnection is ongoing. Our connection to the Goddess may seem severed and destroyed, but truthfully, it is still within us, hidden away, safe, protected, and awaiting the right time to awaken and resurface in all its mighty power.
But believe it or not, that disconnection was supposed to happen. The sacred source of healing and regeneration we hold in the Womb had to be hidden and protected for a very long time. Through the darkness of modern times, the call of the Womb is becoming stronger for many women. Our innate compassionate power and clarion call to serve the Divine Mother and be Her vessel have awakened something deep within us.
This awakening is urgent and vital; it is time for us to respond.
